The type of vaccine that is produced by the introduction of one or more of a pathogen\'s genes into attenuated viruses or bacteria. The attenuated virus or bacterium serves as a vector, replicating within the vertebrate host and expressing the gene(s) of the pathogen. The pathogen\'s antigens induce an immune response.
